As shown in Figure 4, a chiller without integrated free cooling uses less energy annually than a chiller with an integrated coil for all locations but Miami, where warm temperatures limit the usage of a dry cooler. This difference in energy consumption is due to the chiller performance derate of the integrated coil, which more than offsets any savings from free cooling. The chiller with the separate dry cooler, on the other hand, uses slightly less energy each year than the chiller without integrated free cooling, even though it derates its own chiller performance. It can be a great option for applications where low internal loads limit the wintertime run hours, such as hospitals.
